Finding a financial advisor to work with can be hard work.
Stack on the fact that the federal employee retirement system is overly complicated and few advisors understand it, the difficulty in finding help only increases.
Whether CSRS or FERS, many of you have questions that simply can’t be answered through an article or video, but rather through a one-on-one conversation.
If you’re looking for a qualified advisor to help you through the maze of federal employee benefits and what to do at retirement, there’s a possibility we’re a good fit.
The outline below summarizes the typical profile of clients we work with. If you feel this describes you, we would love for you to contact our firm for an initial interview.
This isn’t a high pressured sales call where you feel forced to make a decision. This is a chance to see if we mesh well together.
Real Financial Planning for Federal Employees
I’ve taken great pleasure in helping federal employees all over the country through this blog and at my firm Dane Financial, LLC.
While every client is unique, the federal employees we work with tend to have quite a few similarities.
Here’s a look at the type of clients we are currently helping:
Just in case that doesn’t clear things up, here’s what our clients do not look like:
As I stated earlier, we treat each client as an individual.
I’ve always hated it when I try to get help on something and I’m treated as if I’m just like everybody else. That my situation is the same as everybody else’s and rather than focusing on me, they focus on a cookie cutter approach they use for everybody.
This is why I have made it my mission to make every client feel like they’re my only client.
For each federal employee that is interested in receiving help, I almost always start with a Federal Employee Benefits Report. (You can read more about the report below)
This is the foundation on which we build everything else.
Within the report you will find estimated information about:
- Monthly Pension Payout
- TSP Returns and Fund Overviews
- TSP Withdrawal Options
- Federal Employee Group Life Insurance Costs
- and a lot more.
You have to know where you come from to know where you’re going and that’s exactly what the Federal Employee Benefits Report strives to achieve.
Once the report is created, I like to review it with the person who requested it and see what unique questions and circumstances they need help with.
I help where I can and if I believe I can be of further help I offer to put together a recommendation for financial planning services or something else I believe would help you.
Within this process, we get to really know our client’s goals, objectives, and just them as a person.
For the most part, these plans are built around life events such as preparing for retirement. However, often clients simply have a bunch of issues and questions they need help with which we also accommodate.
How We Communicate
As you can probably see from my blog, I like to use technology. In my experience, technology can be either a hindrance or a great benefit depending on how it is utilized.
I employ the use of phone, email, video conferencing (such as Skype but more secure) to communicate with clients. Many people have a preferred way of communicating and that sits just fine with me.
If somebody is within driving distance of Southwest Missouri where I am located, I love having clients into my office as well.
How to Hire Us
For those federal employees interested in working with us, we came up with a simple, yet powerful process.
This process is called the Federal Retirement Blueprint. Here is a brief rundown of the step-by-step process:
Step One: The Discovery Call
This is where we learn more about your current situation as well as your financial goals. We’ll assess some of your benefits such as FEGLI, FEHB, and TSP to see where you’re at and how we can help.
Step Two: The Benefits Analysis
We’ll create a Benefits Analysis based off of various data collected during the Discovery Call. This will show you estimated numbers for things like the Survivor Annuity Plan as well as you Pension.
Step Three: The Simplified Data Solution
By using RightCapital as our integration partner, you’ll be able to access all of your accounts in one central location. We’ll also be able to see how your investments are performing as well as various other important metrics.
Step Four: The Road Map
This is the step in which things all start coming together. At this time, you will receive a document with all of your questions answered in depth with links and articles included. You’ll also receive the results of your comprehensive financial plan, a TSP Investment Strategy designed specifically for you, and any changes we feel would be beneficial.
Step Five: The Follow-Up
A few weeks after we deliver the plan, we will schedule a follow-up meeting to make sure you’re on track and see if any additional questions need to be addressed.
For clients who want ongoing help managing their investments, fees are based on a percentage of assets under management. In some cases where the client is in need of an income guarantee or insurance for estate planning, commissions may apply.
Our investment management services are competitive, and we strive to our best in matching our clients’ investments with their risk tolerance. If interested in these services, feel free to contact us, and we’ll explain more in depth on how to proceed.
Please note that we never take custody of the assets. We always use a third-party custodian to execute our trades and produce our clients’ statements. What this means is there will always be a record produced for any transaction we do.

What We Do For Our Clients
I firmly believe that clients and their advisor should get along and work together as a team. Sound financial planning and investment management doesn’t work overnight. It’s through time-tested patience and trust that results come about.
I’ve done my very best in structuring my work and services in such a way that gives my clients personal attention and the support they need. I know there is always room for improvement, and I strive to get better at what I do each and every day. My goal is to continue using the countless hours of research I conduct each year and leverage it to benefit those who place their trust in my and my firm.
Thanks to advancements in technology, I’ve been able to work with federal employees all over the US. We have a terrific web-based virtual meeting program that allows me to work with clients in a personal manner despite the distance between us.
If you’ve never thought about working with an advisor virtually, I think you’d be pleasantly surprised at how efficient and enjoyable of an experience it can be. If you live near Southwest Missouri, I’m more than happy to meet you at my office, personally.
What’s the Next Step?
After you’ve read the above, have some interest and would like to know more, I’d be happy to invest 30 minutes of my time in getting to know you and your financial goals. This allows me to see if I can be of help to you and your situation.
I personally do all of our initial appointments via phone and/or web conference.
To set up an initial meeting, have your questions answered, and to see if we are a good fit, just use the “Book Appointment” button below and choose the “Discovery Call” option.
Not quite ready to schedule an appointment? No worries! Feel free to ask us any question on your benefits or retirement. We do our best to respond to emailed questions within 72 hours and although we can’t guarantee we’ll be able to answer every question, but we pride ourselves on having a pretty thorough knowledge of the federal system and finance in general. Just use this form to ask a question of the Fed Retirement Planning team, and someone will get back to you shortly.
